In my career as a wedding planner, I’ve been asked many times if couples should hire me. You might think that my response is always a resounding yes, but the fact is, whether or not to hire a wedding planner actually depends on a few factors. Here are the main questions in which I will often suggest that all couples ask themselves when making the decision of whether or not to hire a wedding planner.
How large or small is your wedding?If you’re having a small intimate gathering for your wedding near your home with a smaller guest list, you might not need a wedding planner to plan all the details as there will typically be fewer numbers to deal with in all aspects. Events of that size are usually more casual, so guests won’t likely notice any missteps along the way. If you’re having a more elaborate wedding with many small details or a large budget with a large guest list, it’s nearly always a good idea to hire a wedding planner, even if only for day-of coordination or the final weeks leading up to wedding day
Do you know how to set and manage a budget? The most crucial part of planning a wedding is establishing and sticking to a set budget. If you need help with this, you should consider hiring a wedding planner. Wedding planners are trained and experienced with working with budgets of a larger scale and keeping focused on the details and ensuring that you stay with your budget. Often, a wedding planner will break the budget down into categories and place a specific amount available for each aspect of the wedding.
Are you having trouble making decisions? Wedding planning can be overwhelming, especially if you have a few opinionated family members and friends clouding your vision trying to include a little bit of what they like even though you’re not really feeling the idea. A wedding planner will be there for you as you make your wedding decisions. She will guide and support you in your decisions and serve as the blame-taker if your choices don’t mesh with those of your “entourage.” As a wedding planner we realize that this is your special day and that you should ensure that your dreams and vision along with your fiancé are our top priority.
Will you realistically have time to plan your wedding on your own? If you’re in a demanding job or have a home life that absorbs much of your time, can you reasonably manage planning a wedding on your own? If not, you should consider hiring a wedding planner. Your wedding planner will handle all of the tasks you don’t have time to tackle.
Where is your wedding location? Are you getting married locally? If you’re getting married close to home, it will be easier for you to schedule and attend vendor appointments rather than if you’re planning a destination wedding (which are becoming incredibly popular!) It’s often best to have a wedding planner in your destination if you’re getting married somewhere other than your hometown so that you know that all the details are going to be handled without worry.
Is there going to be someone managing everything on the wedding day? By this, I don’t mean a family member or close friend who should be enjoying the wedding themselves. It is always a good idea to have an experienced professional handle all the happenings on wedding day. The last thing a couple needs on wedding day is a lot of stress looking after everyone and everything making sure it all comes together as they had spent months prior planning for their wedding day. Hire a wedding planner if you want a professional to orchestrate and oversee all of the events on the wedding day (and in the weeks leading up to it).
As you can see, there are a bunch of factors that go into the decision of whether or not to hire a wedding planner to assist you with planning the wedding.
